Life in the Spirit Seminar at St. Gabriel the Archangel, McKinney

November 7, 2010

McKinney, TX (MetroCatholic) -  Until recently the Holy Spirit was a complete mystery to me.  It is very easy for us to understand the Father and the Son in the Blessed Trinity because their stories and roles are made so clear to us… but, who is this Holy Spirit that makes up the third and very important part of the Trinity?

The Catechism of the Catholic Church tells us in paragraph 691 that “the Holy Spirit” is the proper name of the one whom we adore and glorify with the Father and the Son.  The Church has received this name from the Lord and professes it in Baptism of her new children.   The term “Spirit” translates the Hebrew word ruah, which, in its primary sense, means breath, air, wind.”

The Holy Spirit gives us the gift of complete intimacy with our Lord.  It is the very air that we breathe to survive.  The Holy Spirit is calling to us to say yes to our Lord and live our lives for Him, with complete love and accepting of His will.  St. Augustine told us that the Spirit is to our souls what our souls are to our bodies.

If you are longing for a better relationship with our Lord, want a better prayer life, and/or a better understanding of the role that the Holy Spirit plays in that journey you will not want to miss the “Life in the Spirit Seminar” at St. Gabriel the Archangel in McKinney, TX.

The Life in the Spirit seminar will be a two-day Mission, which will be presented by The Disciples of our Lord Jesus Christ ( and hosted by St. Gabriel’s Holy Spirit Prayer Group.  The seminar will be held on Friday, November 19th (7-9pm) and Saturday, November 20th (8am-4pm) followed by Mass at 5pm with music by the Praise Band, all our welcome!

This will be my first time attending so I have asked a couple of members of the Holy Spirit Prayer Group at St. Gabriel to tell us about their experiences attending the seminar.  Rob Karl, who attended last years seminar said,  “After attending the Life in the Spirit seminar it gave new meaning to Scripture, the Eucharist, and brought to life how the Holy Spirit works in and around us all the time.  The seminar is life changing and has helped me connect more with my Catholic faith and the prayer group that has formed from the weekend has been a source of joy and inspiration as well. This seminar should be done at all parishes.”  Rob’s enthusiasm was echoed by Tracy Stewart’s testimony as well, “The Life In the Spirit Seminar was a wonderful experience.  Not only did it educate me about the meaning of living a life in the Spirit;  it was also uplifting and fulfilling.  I truly felt the Holy Spirit was with us during the singing and praise and worship.  I would say that if you’ve never been to a Life in the Spirit Seminar, you should check it out because it can change your life.  If you have been, I’d recommend attending again to refresh yourself in the Spirit.  I’m personally looking forward to hearing the charismatic Franciscan nuns of the Disciples of Our Lord Jesus Christ speak.  They have dedicated their lives to teaching about the Holy Spirit’s gifts and the charismatic life.  You don’t want to miss this one!”

So please come learn how to make the Holy Spirit come alive in your daily life.  If you’ve been to a previous Life in the Spirit seminar, please come again.  There is always more. The cost is $15 in advance and $20 at the door and includes lunch on Saturday.   For more information, please contact Steven or Rita Auguirre at 972-562-1781, email [email protected]. or visit to register.

MIM Urges Candidates for U.S. House of Representatives and Senate to ‘Speak Out Against the Flood of Illegal Hardcore Adult Pornography Engulfing Our Nation’

September 23, 2010

NEW YORK (MetroCatholic) — On Monday, Morality in Media President Robert Peters sent letters to the chairmen of the National Republican Congressional Committee, Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, Democratic Senate Campaign Committee, and National Republican Senate Congressional Committee. In the letters, Mr. Peters said in part:

“We want to call your attention to an extremely important issue that Federal law enforcement authorities are ignoring, and in so doing are ignoring the concerns of the large majority of voters. We refer to the proliferation of obscenity on the Internet.

“Repeated polling has made it clear that voters support enforcement of existing laws that prohibit the distribution of obscenity on the Internet and elsewhere….

“It does not take an astute politician to recognize how the parents of America react to the prevalence of Internet obscenity and to its terrible effects. We know they are outraged, frightened, worried, angry, and disgusted….

“Unbeknown to many voters, obscenity is illegal. Since 1973, the Supreme Court has held repeatedly that the First Amendment does not protect obscenity; and Congress to its credit has repeatedly updated and strengthened the federal obscenity laws.

“From 1987-1993, the Justice Department also proved that federal obscenity laws could be successfully enforced against large-scale commercial distributors of hardcore adult pornography. During this period more than 120 adult pornographers were convicted.

“And while the Bush administration was in large measure a disappointment when it came to enforcement of obscenity laws, its Justice Department did prove that obscenity laws can still be successfully enforced against commercial distributors of obscene materials.

“Since November 2008, however, there have been no new obscenity indictments involving commercial distributors of hardcore adult pornography.

“There is a pandemic of pornographic addiction. There is overwhelming evidence of a connection between addiction to hardcore adult pornography and sexual abuse of children, child pornography, psychological damage to children, sexual violence against women, sexual trafficking of women and children, and the ruin of many marriages.

“Since the White House has shown no interest in addressing this unprecedented assault on women, on family life and children, and on our nation, that leaves it up to Congress, which appropriates funds for the Justice Department and oversees its work.

“We are a nation that permits the illegal distribution of obscene materials domestically and the export of this degeneracy on the Internet to other nations. What a shameful face to present to the world and a horrid patrimony to bequeath to our children.

“The large majority of voters will welcome your candidates calling for the Justice Department to vigorously enforce federal obscenity laws against these illegal hardcore pornographers who have no rightful place in a decent society.

“We hope you agree and will encourage…candidates…to speak out against the flood of illegal hardcore adult pornography engulfing our nation and in support of vigorous enforcement of federal obscenity laws!

“This is a political tinderbox waiting to be ignited by concerned candidates!”

Judge Betrays Public Safety, Allows Unsafe Abortion Mill to Reopen

September 17, 2010

SHREVEPORT, La., (MetroCatholic) — Tuesday, a Louisiana judge lifted the emergency suspension order issued by the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals, (LDHH), last week allowing an abortion mill to reopen that was deemed to pose an immediate threat to the health, welfare, or safety of patients.

State Judge District Judge R. Michael Caldwell ruled that the Hope Medical Group for Women, a seedy abortion mill in Shreveport, can reopen for business even though it has not fixed the problems that made it a danger to the public. In doing so Caldwell chose to disregard a new state law that gives the LDHH the authority to close unsafe clinics on an emergency basis.

The abortion mill is opened today and taking patients.

Bruce D. Greenstein, Health Secretary for the State of Louisiana told reporters that he is disappointed by the ruling. He issued the following statement blasting the ruling:

The findings of the Department’s survey included several egregious safety violations and at least one resulting in immediate jeopardy. The Department’s conclusion was that women visiting this facility would have their health and safety compromised.

So, today, we are very disappointed that the judge would put the special interests of this abortion facility over the health and safety of women. This order was signed without any notification to us and without any effort to hear from medical professionals about the risk to the facility’s clients posed by the violations our inspectors found. We will continue to fight to protect Louisiana residents and to shut down activities that put women in harm.

A September 1, 2010, press release issued by the LDHH stated the following concerning the conditions at the Hope Medical Group abortion clinic:

Several violations were noted during a recent investigation of the facility, including the facility’s failure to ensure that a physician performed and documented a physical exam on each patient prior to a procedure, failure to properly monitor vital signs of patients under anesthesia, failure to have proper procedures in place for administering anesthesia and failure to have properly trained professionals performing certain medical procedures related to the administering of anesthesia.

“Judge Caldwell showed a gross disregard not only for the law, but for the lives and safety of women by allowing this abortion clinic to reopen under conditions that the Health department has already said presents an immediate health and safety threat,” said Operation Rescue spokesperson Cheryl Sullenger. “This ruling is a betrayal of his oath to uphold the laws of Louisiana.”

A hearing is scheduled for September 21, when a decision will be made on whether to uphold the clinic’s suspension.

False ‘Promises’ of Destructive Embryonic Stem Cell Research Discussed in Senate Hearing

September 17, 2010

WASHINGTON (MetroCatholic) — This morning, the Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies Subcommittee of the Senate Appropriations Committee will hold a hearing titled “The Promise of Human Embryonic Stem Cell Research.”

Penny Nance, CEO of Concerned Women for America, said, “The problem with the ‘promise’ of destructive embryonic stem cell research is that it is simply a dead end street, especially when compared to the successes seen with adult stem cell research. Clinical trials using adult stem cells have proven far more successful and have made significant strides in treating Leukemia, brain tumors, breast cancer, anemia, and especially autoimmune diseases.

“To harvest embryos and destroy life as part of a research process that has little hope of living up to promised success is wrong.

“The Obama administration has already said they are exploring all possible avenues to make sure that they can continue funding this destructive research. President Barack Obama and Senator Harry Reid (D-Nevada) are determined now more than ever to push for the destruction of innocent human life for the sake of scientific study that, in fact, has very little ‘promise.’”

Divided Illinois Supreme Court Rejects Thomas More Society’s Request for Immediate Transfer of Parental Notice Challenge

September 3, 2010

CHICAGO (MetroCatholic) — Tuesday, August 31st, a divided Illinois Supreme Court denied a request by the Thomas More Society to transfer the legal case pending against the Illinois Parental Notice of Abortion Act of 1995 from the Appellate Court to the Supreme Court. Justices Robert R. Thomas and Thomas L. Kilbride dissented from the order denying the transfer.

“We’re obviously disappointed with this ruling, but we remain committed to doing everything we possibly can to bring these appeals to a speedy and positive conclusion,” said Tom Brejcha, president and chief counsel of the Thomas More Society. “The latest constitutional attack on this law by the American Civil Liberties Union was deemed legally meritless and tossed out of court by both a federal appeals court and a Cook County trial court, and yet the Attorney General agreed — inexplicably and without any legal basis — that the enforcement of parental notice should still be stayed, that is, suspended pending the outcome of the ACLU’s appeal.”

With the transfer motion denied, the proceedings will continue in the Illinois Appellate Court, First District, where Thomas More Society attorneys are due to file their opening appeal brief on Friday.

HLI Denounces Eugenicist Professor’s Call to Sterilize the ‘Unfit’

September 3, 2010

FRONT ROYAL, Va. (MetroCatholic) — Monsignor Ignacio Barreiro-Carambula, Interim President of Human Life International (HLI), today denounced comments made recently by British Professor David Marsland in which Marsland called for certain “unfit” members of society to be forcibly sterilized.

“Professor Marsland’s comments only go to show that no evil is ever fully buried in the past,” said Monsignor Barreiro. “Every time we think we’ve seen the last of the Sangerian calls to forcibly sterilize and otherwise do away with the disabled, we are aghast at their return.” Here Monsignor Barreiro was referring to Margaret Sanger, founder of Planned Parenthood, and a noted racist eugenicist who, with the support of Adolf Hitler and many progressive intellectuals, openly called for such programs to be used against racial minorities and other “unfit” persons in the early 20th century.

“Our elites have established a society of contraception and abortion, wherein life itself is just another factor to be controlled at our whim. This society in turn creates more and more people who are depersonalized and marginalized, and they think that the answer to this is to simply get rid of the people whose situations we have helped to create? This is insanity,” said Monsignor Barreiro.

“What many people may not realize is how mainstream Prof. Marsland’s comments are in the ‘progressive’ academy. These so-called ‘philosophers’ are not lovers of wisdom, but destroyers of wisdom and of life itself. Only a corrupt person could make this barbarity sound so ‘reasonable’,” said Monsignor Barreiro. “We are not fooled. We must all denounce this evil and stop it in its tracks.”

Monsignor Barreiro called in particular on Christians and all those of good will who serve in academia to reject Marsland’s murderous reasoning: “This is an opportunity to show that although we have disagreements, at least we can agree that Marsland and those like him have again gone too far. We must tell them that we reject the notion that human beings are mere animals that must be controlled by those who think they know better.”

Lessons from California on Taxpayer Funding of Human Embryo Research

September 1, 2010

NAPA, Calif. (MetroCatholic) — Life Legal Defense Foundation, who in 2005 initiated the lawsuit People’s Advocate v. ICOC, challenging the constitutionality of the governing board of the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM) to fund human embryonic stem cell research (HESCR), today warned not to fall for the same rhetoric being heard from the proponents of federal funding for embryo-destructive research. LLDF makes this warning after yesterday’s request by the Obama administration before the judge — who halted the illegal funding — to allow the funding to continue while the decision is appealed. The recent decision halting funding is available at

CIRM was established by voter initiative in California due in large part to proponents’ promises of cures for all Californians resulting from HESCR. To date, CIRM, or for that matter any HESCR research, has produced no cures or therapies while over 70 therapies for various diseases have been the result of non-controversial and life-affirming cord blood and adult stem cell research —

In spite of the absolute failure of HESCR and a Rasmussen Poll released on Friday, August 27, 2010, that revealed “only 33% of U.S. voters believe that taxpayer money should be spent on embryonic stem cell research” and 57% of those polled OPPOSE taxpayer funding for controversial stem cell research that requires destruction of human embryos, it looks like Congress will consider legislation to approve taxpayer funding for embryo-destructive research when the House reconvenes in September.

H.R. 4808, the legislation most recently introduced by Rep. Diana DeGette (D-CO), has broader consequences than legislation passed by the House in prior Congresses. Pro-Life leaders oppose H.R. 4808 because it directs federal funds to embryo-destructive research and unlike prior bills passed by Congress, provides a basis for taxpayer funding for research on stem cells taken from cloned embryos and embryos created solely for the purpose of destruction.

Perhaps Americans who oppose federal funding of embryo-destructive research have watched the waste of taxpayer funds in California appropriated to CIRM. CIRM funding has been used largely for kingdom building among HESCR proponents. Funds have also been used to advance HESCR rhetoric by characterizing it as science education in government schools and colleges. An analysis of how CIRM has spent millions of dollars of the California taxpayers’ hard-earned cash under the guise of “cures for all” that proponents promised would result from embryo destructive research is available at

Life Legal Defense Foundation was established in 1989, and is a non-profit organization composed of attorneys and other concerned citizens, committed to the sanctity of human life. For more information, call Dana Cody at 707.337.6889.

Only One Book Tells Mother Teresa’s Full Story

September 1, 2010

HUNTINGTON, Ind. (MetroCatholic) — As the world remembers the late, soon-to-be-canonized Blessed Mother Teresa (1910-1997) on her 100th birthday today, there is just one book she wanted published about her life’s message. And she asked Fr. Joseph Langford — her longtime trusted friend and co-founder of the Missionary of Charity Fathers — to write it.

This is Mother Teresa’s true story revealed for the first time, kept hidden for more than 60 years — to help others live extraordinarily, like she did, through their own ordinary lives.

Mother Teresa’s Secret Fire: The Encounter That Changed Her Life, and How It Can Transform Your Own (Our Sunday Visitor — by Fr. Joseph Langford, MC) contains the inspiration behind Mother Teresa’s work. Her lifelong desire to help others grew out of a mystical encounter with Christ in 1946. On Sept. 10 that year, while riding a train from Calcutta to Darjeeling in the Himalayas, she experienced God in a vision, about which she hesitated to speak for almost 40 years — until 1984 with Fr. Langford.

“I waited in silence for an answer. She looked up and said, ‘Yes, it is true.’ Then after a pause, she added, ‘And one day you must tell the others….’” says Fr. Langford about the mandate Mother Teresa gave him, some 24 years prior to publishing Secret Fire. In this book, Fr. Langford details Mother Teresa’s response to a direct petition from God — as given her in the vision. The fullness of her response to what He asked is what brought the world’s attention to her.

At 48, Mother Teresa stepped away from the security of her life as a middle school principal, and with only five rupees to her name, she immersed herself in the slums of Calcutta. Within her own lifetime, her Missionaries of Charity had spread her work of love to more than 120 countries, and touched millions of lives.

“How we respond to what God asks will define our lives and our world,” says Fr. Langford. “The choice is ours.”

To try and capture the essence of Mother Teresa from splash-stories in TIME Magazine or carefully edited TV documentaries can only provide a shallow view. “Mother Teresa lived with her heart in the heavens and her hands buried in the worst this world can offer,” says Fr. Langford.

And then a few years ago, when world media attempted to portray Mother Teresa’s last days as spent doubting the existence of God, Fr. Langford clarifies what really transpired.

“Contrary to press reports, Mother Teresa did not suffer a crisis of faith … but rather, a loss of feeling of faith. What had been her usual consolation in prayer abruptly ended,” said Langford in a recent interview with Zenit News Service. “Though she would not understand it until later, she was being asked to share the same inner darkness, the same trial of belief suffered by the poor and destitute — and to endure it for their sake and for the love of her Lord.”

“Never did her lack of feeling become lack of faith,” Fr. Langford emphasizes.

And like the destitution that Christ must have felt, but which didn’t keep Him from pressing forward with His mission, “Mother Teresa would encourage us all to do the same in our own Calcutta,” says Langford. “Instead of allowing our trials and pain to become a prison, we can, as she did, make our pain a bridge into the pain of others, a bond of solidarity, a catalyst for charity.”

Our Sunday Visitor also publishes three additional books about Blessed Mother Teresa:

  • Mother Teresa: In The Shadow of Our Lady (Fr. Joseph Langford, MC)
  • Mother Teresa’s Lessons on Love & Secrets of Sanctity (Susan Conroy)
  • Listening to God with Mother Teresa (Woodeene Koenig-Bricker)

Bus Tour Exposes Indoctrination in Public Schools

August 30, 2010

WACO, Texas (MetroCatholic) — Touring the United States in a school bus, filmmaker Colin Gunn hopes to inform Americans about the indoctrination he says is taking place in public schools. Gunn will take his wife and seven children from Waco, TX to Boston, MA, talking with educators, historians and everyday Americans about the problems with public schools. The month-long tour, which begins on August 31st, will be made into a documentary film later this year.

Gunn contends that public school curriculum is antagonistic to Christianity, promotes Darwinian propaganda and socialist, Marxist agendas. He considers it ironic that conservatives send their children to a school system that undermines their values. He says, “We now are facing all these problems in America — high taxation, welfare dependency, government debt — and as Christians and conservatives we have to see we can’t solve those problems until we solve the public schooling problem.”

Concerned about the effect of public education on future generations, Gunn decided to embark on the 3,000 mile bus tour as a means of engaging conservatives on these issues. He hopes that his seminars during the tour, and the subsequent film, will cause conservatives to rethink the government school system entirely.

“Conservatives should know that capitalism or the free market will bring the highest quality goods and services at the cheapest price. It’s always amazing to hear conservatives support the public school system when you know that system will bring the worst product at the highest price.”

The “Indoctrination Bus Tour” will visit key locations related to public education, including Dayton, TN, site of the famous 1925 Scopes Monkey Trial; the Creation Museum in Petersburg, KY; Washington, DC; New York, NY; and Boston, MA, the birthplace of public education. The Gunn family will be joined on the tour by Gunn’s fellow producer, Joaquin Fernandez, and a crew prepared to interview various national leaders and average Americans. The producers will be “live blogging” during the tour so supporters can follow their daily progress.

Colin Gunn is an award-winning producer/director and accomplished animator. Originally from Hamilton, Scotland, Gunn now lives in Waco, Texas with his family.

To interview Colin Gunn, please contact Joaquin Fernandez at 803-240-4934 or [email protected]. More information about the Indoctrination Bus Tour and film can be found at
