SBA List ‘Stop Abortion Funding’ Petition to Hit 35K Signatures in First Month

December 2, 2010

WASHINGTON, DC (MetroCatholic) - Today, the Susan B. Anthony List’s “Stop Abortion Funding” online petition, launched shortly after the November election, closed in on the 35,000-signature mark. The campaign, aimed at ending all federal funding of abortion in the 112th Congress, includes efforts to mobilize its ever-growing grassroots network and an online petition (http://www.stopabortionfunding.com/) encouraging Congress to pass legislation prohibiting taxpayer funding of abortion.

“Now is the time to translate pro-life electoral gains into serious pro-life legislative victories,” said SBA List President Marjorie Dannenfelser. “The enthusiastic grassroots response to this campaign echoes the support Americans showed for pro-life leaders at the ballot box on November 2nd and have consistently shown in poll after poll for commonsense laws that save lives and defund abortion providers. This consensus support, paired with November’s electoral gains have given Congress clear marching orders: the time to end taxpayer funding of abortion is now.”

The “Stop Abortion Funding” campaign urges Members of Congress to pass two priority pieces of pro-life legislation: the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act, sponsored by Reps. Chris Smith (R-NJ) and Dan Lipinski (D-IL), which will create a government-wide statutory prohibition on taxpayer funding of abortion, repealing abortion funding in Obamacare, and the Title X Abortion Provider Prohibition Act, sponsored by Rep. Mike Pence (R-IN), which will ensure that tax dollars are not sent to abortion providers under Title X family planning funds.

“Americans strongly oppose having their tax dollars pay for abortion and want lawmakers to make a priority of passing legislation that prohibits it,” Dannenfelser said. “They want pro-life leadership that produces life-saving results and the timing has never been better for that to happen.”

The Susan B. Anthony List spent $11 million during the 2010 midterm election cycle. Overall, the SBA List was involved in 90 races including 62 wins and 28 losses. Successes included: defeating 15 of 20 so-called “pro-life” Democrats who voted for abortion funding in the health care reform bill; increasing the number of pro-life women in the House by 70 percent; filling the void of pro-life women in the U.S. Senate and increasing the number of pro-life women governors from one to four.

SBA List ‘Stop Abortion Funding’ Campaign Calls for End of Federal Funding of Abortion

November 8, 2010

WASHINGTON (MetroCatholic) - Today, the Susan B. Anthony List announced the launch of its “Stop Abortion Funding” campaign aimed at ending all federal funding of abortion in the upcoming 112th Congress. The campaign includes a website for pro-life activists to lobby Congress (www.StopAbortionFunding.com).

“Now is the time to translate Tuesday’s pro-life electoral gains into pro-life legislative victories,” said SBA List President Marjorie Dannenfelser. “On Tuesday, large numbers of Representatives learned the consequences of their vote for taxpayer funding of abortion in the health care bill when they were thrown out of office by the constituents they betrayed. Those Members have been replaced by authentic pro-life voices supported by a strongly pro-life GOP leadership. The GOP leadership understands the urgency of addressing the tragedy of nearly 4,000 abortions a day and has pledged to defund abortion in its ‘Pledge to America.’ Now is the time to make good on that Pledge to restore moral and fiscal responsibility in Washington. Congress must start by ending federal funding of abortion both here and abroad.”

The SBA List’s petition and outreach efforts will include mobilization of its ever-growing 280,000-member grassroots network to encourage Members to pass pro-life legislation and stop pro-abortion legislation in the 112th Congress.

To accomplish this, the SBA List will urge Members of Congress to pass two priority pieces of pro-life legislation. The first bill is the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act, sponsored by Reps. Chris Smith (R-NJ) and Dan Lipinski (D-IL), which will create a government-wide statutory prohibition on taxpayer funding of abortion, which would repeal abortion funding in Obamacare. The second bill is the Title X Abortion Provider Prohibition Act, sponsored by Rep. Mike Pence (R-IN), which would ensure that tax dollars are not sent to abortion providers like Planned Parenthood under Title X family planning funds.

“With the majority of Americans labeling themselves pro-life and an even stronger majority agreeing that tax dollars should not fund abortion, the consensus for passage of pro-life legislation could not be stronger,” Dannenfelser said. “The Stop Abortion Funding campaign will echo the message sent from the ballot box that Americans are ready to pass life-saving laws.”

The Susan B. Anthony List spent $11 million during the 2010 midterm elections, including: $3.4 million on its “Votes Have Consequences” project targeting self-described “pro-life” Democrats who voted for abortion funding in the health care bill; $2.3 million on its efforts to elect pro-life women to congressional and statewide office; and $1.4 million on defeating pro-abortion incumbents and protecting pro-life leaders. SBA List members across the country bundled more than $600,000 in direct contributions to candidates. Overall, the SBA List was involved in 90 races including 61 wins, 21 losses, and 8 yet to be called. Successes included: defeating 15 of 20 “Votes Have Consequences” targets; increasing the number of pro-life women in the House by 60 percent; filling the void of pro-life women in the U.S. Senate and increasing the number of pro-life women governors from one to four. In SBA List-versus-EMILY’s List head-to-head races, SBA List candidates won 91 percent of the time.

National Pro-Life Leaders to Confront Catholic Hospital with Abortionist on Staff

July 27, 2010

DURANGO, CO (MetroCatholic) -  LifeGuard will hold a press conference on Thursday, July 29, to divulge the details of the ongoing relationship between Catholic hospital Mercy Regional Medical Center and abortion provider Grossman.

“A Catholic Hospital that grants full privileges to a Doctor who brutally murders babies every week is NOT a Catholic Hospital,” stated Joe Scheidler, National Director of the Pro-Life Action League. “Mercy Regional can no longer ignore this issue. We hope to send a clear message — we want Dr. Grossman out of there.”

Speakers will include Joe Scheidler, National Director of the Pro-Life Action League, Father Fessio, founder of Ignatius Press, Walter Hoye, Founder of the California Civil Rights Foundation, Gualberto Garcia-Jones of Personhood Colorado, and Dan Anguis, LifeGuard Director. These national leaders will explain the serious breach of directive 45 of the Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Services, which states in part, “Catholic health care institutions need to be concerned about the danger of scandal in any association with abortion providers.”

Wisconsin Right to Life Announces Campaign to Opt-Out of Obamacare Abortion Coverage

May 27, 2010

Milwaukee, WI (MetroCatholic) -  Wisconsin Right to Life is announcing today a massive campaign aimed at allowing Wisconsin to opt-out of abortion coverage in the state-based insurance “exchanges” created by the federal health care law known as Obamacare.

According to Susan Armacost, Wisconsin Right to Life Legislative Director, the organization has been working with legislators for some time on this issue.  “Polling has consistently shown that citizens do not want to subsidize abortion coverage or pay for abortions,” said Armacost.  “Obamacare requires federal agencies to subsidize and administer health plans that will pay for elective abortions.  The law also opens the door to direct federal funding of abortion in Community Health Centers, hundreds of which are operated by Planned Parenthood - the nation’s largest abortion provider,” Armacost said.

“While state legislation cannot correct all of the abhorrent federal abortion provisions, we do have the ability to make sure that the state-based insurance exchanges are not spending tax dollars to subsidize abortion.”

The Executive Order signed by President Obama, widely and inaccurately reported as prohibiting taxpayer abortion funding under the law, cannot overrule the abortion impact of the law.

Opt-out legislation cannot be introduced until January of 2011.  As a first step in the campaign to enact opt-out legislation, Wisconsin Right to Life is promoting a petition to our new Governor, who will take office then, letting him know that hundreds of thousands of Wisconsin citizens want our state to opt-out of subsidizing abortions through health insurance.  The petition can be found online at www.wrtl.org/petition.
