SACRED ART EXHIBIT and SILENT AUCTION

BENEFITING CATHOLIC RADIO NETWORK

GUIDELINES 2009 

     Eligibility 

          The event is open to Catholic high school students in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, grades 9-12. Students will donate their artwork. All accepted entries will be offered for sale by Silent Auction to benefit the Guadalupe Radio Network, KATH-910AM (English) and KJON- 850AM (Spanish). All silent auction proceeds will be donated to Guadalupe Radio Network. Theme    Students may design personal pieces of sacred art that convey a message of “Christ in Me, in the Spirit of St. Paul.” St. Paul challenges us today to encounter our culture bravely with Christ as our guide. Recall St. Paul’s conversion and his echoing of Christ’s message to love one another. Artwork Categories  

  • Computer generated art
  • Collage: must be two dimensional
  • Drawings: pastels, colored pencil, pencil, charcoal, ink, markers
  • Mixed media: use of more than two mediums such as pencil, ink, etc.
  • Paintings: oil, acrylics, watercolor, etc.
  • Photography
  • Prints: lithographs, silkscreen, block prints
  • Sculpture
  • General Guidelines 

  • Student may submit up to three pieces of art
  • Pieces may be three-dimensional
  • Each piece can be no larger than 48 in. x 48 in. to the outside dimensions of the frame.
  • Entry Form may be found online at www.dfwcatholic.org by clicking the Sacred Art Exhibit and Silent Auction link
  • For 3 dimensional pieces submit 2 digital pictures
  • All appropriate pieces must be framed or matted to specified guidelines (see below).
  • Certain forms of art may require protection, i.e. chalk, charcoal or watercolors, etc. It is suggested that such works be securely covered with acetate or clear plastic wrap. 
  • Entries will be reviewed for compliance with guidelines. 
  • Entrants will be contacted through their teachers/parents, by email, of acceptance for Exhibit and Silent Auction. 
  • Deadline is Friday, April 3, 2009 for Entry Form which must be accompanied with a digital picture of art work sent to [email protected]
  • Works accepted must arrive at the Knights of Columbus Hall Council No.799 10110 Shoreview Road, Dallas, Texas 75238 on April 11, 2009 from 12:00 to 3:00PM. NO EXCEPTIONS. 
  • Artwork will be displayed for Exhibit and Silent Auction at the Knights of Columbus Hall  No.799 10110 Shoreview Road, Dallas, Texas 75238 on Saturday, April 18, 2009 from 1-3pm
  • Matting Guidelines 

  • Two- dimensional works should be matted and mounted with no hanging mechanisms.
  • Backing material should be 1/4” to ½” foam core or similar heavy duty cardboard.
  • All submitted pieces should be suitable for hanging.
  • If the artwork is abstract in design, please indicate on the back side which side is up with arrows.
  • A copy of the Entry Form must be attached to the back of the artwork along with an adhesive label as shown. Please use the largest label you have available.
  • Framing Guidelines 

  • Works on paper should be protected by Glass/Plexiglass.
  • Any pieces with a frame size larger than 10 in. x 13 in. containing glass will be declined. For safety reasons, Plexiglass is preferred.
  • No “snap on” frames with glass are to be used.
  • Please use sturdy picture hangers. Two hooks should be attached at the right and the left sides of the back of the work and connect a wire between hooks.
  • If the artwork is abstract in design, please indicate on the back side which side is up with arrows.
  • A copy of the Entry Form must be attached to the back of the artwork along with an adhesive label as shown. Please use the largest label you have available.
  • Adhesive Label   

    Please include the following information on an adhesive label on the back of the framed piece of art or with the sculpture when delivered.

    Suitability Guidelines 

  • Each entry must be an original in concept, design, and execution and may not violate any U.S copyright laws. Note: Any entry which has been reproduced from an existing photo, painting, graphic, advertisement or any other work produced by another person is a violation of the competition rules and will not be accepted.
  • As outlined in these guidelines, the final decision regarding suitability for exhibition is left to a panel of qualified persons. While it is not the intent to censor any artwork, we do wish to avoid artwork that is potentially inappropriate for display.
  • Artwork must adhere to the guidelines of the Sacred Art Competition. In accordance with this policy, exhibits depicting subjects of contemporary political controversy or a sensationalistic or gruesome nature are not acceptable. It is necessary that all artwork be reviewed by the panel and any portions not in consonance with the Commission’s policy will be omitted from the exhibit.
