So tragic, I don’t know the details other than what is given below since this is a developing story, but my heart goes out to the family and breaks for them. I can’t imagine what his older brother must feel and what he is going through. I’m sure he is very sorry for what happened.
Pray for him and his family, I can’t imagine losing one of my sons, especially to tragedy.
The shooting happened Friday afternoon at a home in the Lake Nona area, on Portafino Drive in the Nona Crest subdivision.
Orlando police said the victim was shot by his 16-year-old brother.
The 12-year-old was taken to Arnold Palmer Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Investigators said they are working to determine the facts as to exactly what led to the shooting. Police said it was too early in the investigation to determine if there would be any charges.
Nona Crest is a gated community off Narcoossee Road, north of Lake Nona Boulevard.

Unfortunately kids/teens don’t always think before they act and do things that are unsafe, like crawling into the wrong window to sneak back into your house at night only to get shot after finding yourself in the wrong home. Or going out to have fun drinking and driving with friends and ending up dead.
This is another horrific tragedy that is not about the gun, but the poor choices people make. Criminals choose to commit crimes and in these cases teens/young people choose to make bad decisions that put them in harms way. However, I do believe in responsible gun ownership and if the parents owned the gun it should have been securely locked and stored where the kids could not get access to it without adult supervision.
I don’t think there are laws to require keeping your guns in a locked safe or locked, but it is almost impossible to enforce such laws without punishment when accidents like this happen. Just as parents are charged with neglect when their child drowns in a pool without a safety gate, otherwise if there isn’t a law requiring the safety gate or in this case the gun to be locked up, the parents are unlikely to be charged with negligence.
