Do you think public schools are going too far when they start teaching about other religions in school while continuing to claim separation of church and state when it comes to celebrating Christian holidays or teaching anything about the history of Christianity or the traditions our nation was founded upon?

After reading this story you might think today’s public schools have gone too far. Or perhaps it’s time to bring Christianity and patriotism back in our schools as well?

Excerpted Fox News by Todd Starnes:
An Advanced Placement World Geography teacher at a Texas high school who encouraged students to dress in Islamic clothing also instructed them to refer to the 9-11 hijackers not as terrorists – but as “freedom fighters,” according to students who were in the class.Students at Lumberton High School were also told to stop referring to the Holocaust as Genocide – instead they were told to use the term “ethnic cleansing.”

John Valastro, the superintendent of the Lumberton Independent School District, told Fox News that the teacher did absolutely nothing wrong.

“What is more dangerous – fear and ignorance or education and understanding,” he asked. “From our standpoint, we are here to educate the kids.”

Valastro said the teacher involved is a 32-year veteran who was simply following state teaching guidelines.

“I don’t think my freshman-level teacher was trying to politicize radical Islam or anything like that,” he told Fox News. “I don’t think our teacher has..to my knowledge ever converted a single student to Islam.”

The Islamic lessons in the small public high school generated national attention after a photograph of four female students wearing burqas surfaced on Facebook.

April LeBlanc’s 15-year-old daughter was one of the students in the photograph. She told Fox News that many parents in the district feel betrayed by school officials.

“My biggest thing is not the burqa,” she said. “That was the key to opening up the rest. It’s scary how far they dove into the Islamic faith. It’s scary what they taught my daughter. Who’s in charge of this? How did our superintendent let this slip through the cracks?”

LeBlanc said the students were told that they could no longer use the terms suicide bomber or terrorist. Instead, they were instructed to use the words “freedom fighters.”

“This teacher taught her that a freedom fighter is when they give their life for the Holy War – and that they’re going to go to heaven,” she told Fox News. “They were saturating these kids in Islam and my daughter is an American Christian child.”

Madelyn LeBlanc told Fox News that it was clear her teacher was very uncomfortable lecturing the students.

“I do have a lot of sympathy for her,” the 15-year-old said. “At the very beginning she said she didn’t want to teach it but it was in the curriculum.”

Her mother added that it was her impression that the teacher did not agree with the quote about calling the terrorists freedom fighters and laced her lecture with sarcasm.

During a lesson on Judaism, LeBlanc said the teacher told the class, “Students, I’m supposed to be politically correct and tell you that the Holocaust was not Genocide. It was an ethnic cleansing.”

LeBlanc said her daughter kept detailed notes of every classroom lecture and as she read the transcripts she became disturbed.

“Really,” she asked. “They can’t call the Holocaust Genocide? I was more upset with that than the lessons on Islam. It made me sick.”

And then came the comparison between the 9-11 hijackers and the freedom fighters.

Madelyn said a young man sitting beside her was stunned.

“He was shocked that we had to call them that,” she told Fox News. “He laughed and asked the teacher, ‘Is that a joke? Are you serious? Why do we have to call them that? That makes it sound okay (what they did) And it’s not.’”

Madelyn said the teacher didn’t know how to respond.

“She said it was something we have to learn for the end of the year testing,” she said. “I’m sure it was very difficult for her to do.”

Madelyn said the lesson about freedom fighters made her feel “terrible.”

“That made it sound like what they were doing was okay,” she said.

The superintendent also defended the lesson on freedom fighters.

“The whole idea behind this particular lesson – do you call yourself a freedom fighter or Islamic jihadist – or whatever it is you want to be called – you’ve got to put things in perspective,” the superintendent said. “We’re trying to teach the kids to discern for themselves that one thing can be called many different things.”

Valastro said it’s important for students to understand context.

“We might see it as terrorism, but from the Islamic side they might call it jihadist or freedom fighter,” he said.

The superintendent said he was not aware of the specific comments made about the 9-11 hijackers – but conceded there was only one side to the attack.

“I do agree it was a terrorist attack,” he said. “But in several classes across this country, you’re going to have a make-up of students from all over the world in your class. We teach it as an act of terrorism – whereas they are teaching it to their kids as a revolutionary event.”

Fox News has learned that the lessons were not part of a controversial statewide curriculum called CSCOPE. That program has generated massive criticism for being pro-Islam and anti-Christian.

Janice VanCleave, a vocal CSCOPE critic and the founder of Texas CSCOPE Review, said that may be the case – but the fingerprints of CSCOPE are all over the AP class.

“With or without the lessons, the class was using required information set by CSCOPE and required by the superintendent,” she said.

VanCleave said she was personally disgusted to learn that Texas school children were being taught that the 9-11 hijackers were freedom fighters.
…..

LeBlanc said she was especially bothered by the lack of emphasis on other religions. She said there were hardly any lessons on Judaism and none on Christianity.

“I wondered how it was okay for them to go so in-depth into a religion from the other side of the world but it was not okay for them to be like that with Christianity,” she said.

“I try to stay open-minded,” she said. “I don’t want my daughter to be ignorant about the world. My kids watch the news with us. We make them aware. I don’t even mind the high school teaching these things.”

But, she added, there was no balance.

“They can talk about how important Mecca is – but why aren’t they talking about how important Christianity was to the founding of the nation,” she asked.

LeBlanc and other parents said they feel betrayed.

“We trusted these people,” she said of the school system. “It scares me. I feel like our school is being infiltrated. How can this not be a sign? We’re talking about Lumberton, Texas. We’re talking about a small town with Christian churches on every street corner. Right in our small school this is going on.”

Update: After Muslim Burqa Lesson, Student Pulled From Lumberton School – minor students cried today after being forced to sign incident report about what happened without parent notified or allowed to be at the meeting, parents furious – the school says this lesson seems to be a Lumberton lesson and not CSCOPE lesson, but CSCOPE Experts say it was CSCOPE influenced – Senator Dan Patrick Investigating

Earlier this Month (February 2013), BEFORE this Burqa lesson was ever taught, I first learned that Lumberton ISD uses CSCOPE and wrote this article: Lumberton ISD uses Liberal CSCOPE that teaches Allah is God and Boston Tea Party was Terrorism like 9/11.

Right after I wrote that article, I went to the Lumberton School Board meeting and spoke to the School Board at the beginning of the meeting. I explained to the school board the problems with CSCOPE and asked them, at least, to have a hearing about CSCOPE and whether or not it should still be used at Lumberton ISD. The school board members did seem concerned and asked the Superintendent questions about CSCOPE. The Superintendent, John Valastro, assured the Board that the CSCOPE program was not used very much and they had not run into any issues with bad lessons getting taught by teacher.

Not even a month after I was assured at the LISD School Board meeting that there were no CSCOPE lesson problems at Lumberton ISD, I get emailed this article from WND with a picture of Lumberton ISD students in Burqas with quotes from students saying they were even told by the teacher that “we are going to change your perception about Islam” and the teacher in the Burqa lesson, according to a student, also said, “I do not necessarily agree with this, but I am supposed to teach you that we are not to call these people terrorists anymore, but freedom fighters.”

The lesson teaches that Burqas are just an alternative dress style that Muslims wear, when in reality, women in Muslim countries are oppressed and FORCED to wear these Burqas or face even possibly death.

At the end of class, the students were assigned to write a paper about Egypt. According to one student, they were instructed to discuss “how Egypt was a good country until democracy took over, and that things were finally corrected when the Muslim brotherhood came into power.”

Fox News has more on this story here:
The Lumberton Independent School District issued a statement responding to the incident on Monday, saying, “The lesson that was offered focused on exposing students to world cultures, religions, customs, and belief systems … Clothing expresses the individual culture. The lesson is not teaching a specific religion, and the students volunteered to wear the clothing.”

The principal of the school also said that the lesson was required by the state. This claim prompted Sen. Dan Patrick (R – Texas), chairman of the Senate Education Committee, to launch an investigation in which he uncovered that it wasn’t required by the state after all. So, the investigation was dropped.

Patrick, however, told Fox News he’s still appalled. “Imagine if a Muslim student was told to dress up like a priest,” he said.

The principal continues to support the lesson.

As the site Answering Muslims asks:
I wonder if students will also be encouraged not to be friends with Jews and Christians (Qur’an 5:51), and to regard Jews and Christians as “the worst of creatures” (Qur’an 98:6), and to violently subjugate Jews and Christians (Qur’an 9:29), and to kill anyone who leaves Islam (Sahih al-Bukhari 6922), and to beat women into submission (Qur’an 4:34), and to have sex with prepubescent girls (Qur’an 65:4), and to rape female captives (Qur’an 4:24). If you’re going to teach kids what it’s like to follow Muhammad, at least give them an accurate picture.

Do you think any of these beliefs will be taught about Islam and their traditions??

According to the site Atlas Shrugs, women in Islam are oppressed and beaten if they don’t wear the burqas:
According to a student in the class, the lesson was to teach about the life of women in Islam. The burqa exercise focused on fashion and did not include the fact that in many Muslim communities, women who appear in public without a burqa face being beaten, imprisoned or murdered by family members, vigilante groups or even the state.
At the end of class, the students were assigned to write a paper about Egypt. According to one student, they were instructed to discuss “how Egypt was a good country until democracy took over, and that things were finally corrected when the Muslim Brotherhood came into power.”
Muslim women are portrayed as liberated in CSCOPE literature. In a lesson titled “Thinking About Sexuality” that utilizes a series of film clips, students are asked, “What do the women portrayed in these film clips think Islam teaches about sexuality? How are their thoughts similar or dissimilar to your own ideas about sexuality?”
Under the subheading “For further discussion,” select quotes from Muslim women are included for student reflection.
A women named Harlina Halizah says: “I don’t think it is fair to say that Islam restricts your sexual desire. It is more directing it toward a more purposeful kind of life.”
Halizah goes on to say, “I don’t need to be liberated. I was born a free person.”
Students are then asked: “Do you agree? What would you define as the criteria for being ‘liberated’?”
Another Muslim female prototype, Zainah Anwar, is quoted under the subheading “Thinking about Gender Relations.”
“We found that it is not Islam that discriminates against women, it is not the verses in the Quran, it is the way that these verses have been interpreted by men, living in patriarchal societies who wish to maintain their dominance, and their superiority and control over women.”
To get a better understanding, WND reached out to Mary Bowen. Bowen is a teacher of more than 30 years with a masters degree in curriculum who recently testified before the Senate Education Committee about CSCOPE’s academic deficiencies and its politically driven nature.
Commenting on a picture in the curriculum of smiling Muslim children, Bowen said, “I wonder if they have been taught that the women they are representing cannot drive, cannot be schooled, that they do not have legal birth records and if they are accused of rape/sexual impropriety their father can legally take them out on the patio and kill them like a dog without legal penalty.
“I just wonder if they are being taught the real story behind the burqa.
