Texans for Life Commends the Republican Party of Texas for Emphasizing Women’s Right to View Their Sonograms

DALLAS (MetroCatholic) – Saturday, December 6th, the State Republican Executive Committee, the governing board of the Republican Party of Texas, voted overwhelmingly to give Republican primary voters a voice as to whether or not abortion providers should be required to use ultrasound technology, or sonograms, when performing abortions, and then make that sonogram available to the patient. While most abortion providers profess to routinely using ultrasound in performing abortions, few women ever know that they are paying for the procedure or are given an opportunity to view it.
The resolution to be included on the ballot in the March 2010 Primary reads “Sonograms: The Texas Legislature should enact legislation requiring a sonogram be performed and shown to each mother about to undergo a medically unnecessary, elective abortion.”
Women considering abortion must be fully informed before undergoing this procedure, just as they undoubtedly would be before any other medical procedure. “It is unconscionable that doctors would be withholding information about relevant medical tests being performed on women, and PAID for by them. This is just one more way women in distress are being abused by the abortion industry,” according to Kyleen Wright, president of Texans for Life Coalition.
Planned Parenthood and other abortion providers want abortion to be a careless, thoughtless and dehumanized procedure. Texans on the other hand, and in particular Republicans, want each abortion decision to be well-thought out and even agonized over; with the woman making the choice having ALL the relevant information at her disposal.
Last session, a bill to remedy this was carried by Senator Dan Patrick (R-Houston) in the Senate, where it passed. Representative Frank Corte (R-San Antonio) authored the House version of the bill, which died as a result of Democrats’ chubbing. The legislation is a major priority for Texans for Life Coalition and other pro-life organizations, and we are excited to see the Republican Party embrace this effort.
