TEACHER NATURALIST
Youth Ministry, FT Employee
Catholic Youth Organization (Seattle, WA)
The Catholic Youth Organization of the Archdiocese of Seattle is currently seeking qualified staff for our residential outdoor environmental education program at Camp Hamilton in Monroe, Washington. The CYO Environmental Education program proves a unique ministry to Catholic middle school students through hands-on experiential learning activities, forest and wetland hikes, and community building activities. Lessons are science based; our goal is to provide an extension of a classroom in an outdoor setting, allowing students to discover a sense of self, and appreciation of others.
Staff members gain valuable experience planning and teaching lessons, learning different techniques of behavioral management and child development skills. Previous employees have gone on to pursue a variety of careers opportunities, including environmental research, graduate degrees, teaching or continuing in the environmental education field.
Responsibilities of a teacher naturalist include leading a day group of 12-15 students and teaching lessons on forest, water and wildlife ecology. Teacher Naturalists participate in or assist in leading evening programs but are not responsible for overnight supervision of students. Staff members are expected to be Christian role models to all they encounter while working and required, at times, to lead faith formation activities for students. Staff also assists with many other camp operations, including cleaning, kitchen work, and maintenance projects.
Qualified candidates are at least 18 years old; have enthusiasm for working with middle school students; have completed two years college level course work or related experience; CPR and First Aid certifications; possess the ability to lead and engage students in faith based activities and prayers. Experience working with children, either informal or formal education settings is important. Candidates should express the desire to promote environmental stewardship and be comfortable working in a Catholic environment.
Other available positions for the spring include: assistant director, cook, assistant cook, and gardener. All positions are seasonal, beginning with staff training in March 25 and ending on June 6. Most of our sessions are 4 days in length and run Tuesday – Friday. A calendar with more details will be sent to applicants. Staff are provided room and board on-site and paid a starting rate of $2500 for the season. Staff live onsite at Camp Hamilton during sessions and have the option to stay during days off.
