Regional Coordinator of Evangelization – Archdiocese of Detroit (Detroit, MI)

Pastoral Ministry, FT Employee
Archdiocese of Detroit (Detroit, MI)

“In its precise sense, evangelization is the missio ad gentes directed to those who do not know Christ. In a wider sense, it is used to describe ordinary pastoral work, while the phrase new evangelization designates pastoral outreach to those who no longer practice the Christian faith (Doctrinal Note on Some Aspects of Evangelization, 12).
A regional coordinator for evangelization works as an integral part of a team in identifying and promoting suitable ways and means of accomplishing the new evangelization. The coordinator is responsible for promoting within an assigned region the Archbishop of Detroit’s vision for evangelization as promulgated in the Pastoral Plan and Priorities, flowing from the mission to “Share Christ in and through His Church.”

Understanding that all Catholics are all called to evangelize, but not all are evangelists (cf. Eph. 4:11), the coordinator for evangelization will “work toward cultivating an active core of Catholics to serve as ministers of evangelization in their parishes, homes, neighborhoods and workplaces.” He or she will be and train agents for the new evangelization in parishes with a special emphasis on “encountering Jesus personally.”
The coordinator will also work with existing evangelization ministries or help initiate new ones, depending on the parish situation. They are to stress a unified focus on the new evangelization among all the parish ministries.
In addition, they are to assist the vicariates to foster evangelization through common activity and help pastors know and implement strategies “that the good news of the Gospel reaches those living in their territory who are non-believers, since these too, no less than the faithful, must be included in the care of souls” (Can. 771 2).
A coordinator is at the service of the parishes and vicariates of the entire region, working under the direct supervision of the Associate Director of Evangelization, and the Director for the Department for Evangelization, Catechesis and Schools.

1.You will work in communion with the other coordinators to form a true evangelization team, and propose new ideas to improve your collaboration and evangelization efforts.
2.You will assist in the implementation of the Archbishop’s Pastoral Plan and Priorities for evangelization in your assigned region, but will be open to using your personal gifts throughout the Archdiocese.
3.You will work collaboratively with the Central Services staff and pastoral leadership to implement a comprehensive vision of the new evangelization into every aspect of their work.
4.You will offer individual, parish, Vicariate, Regional and Archdiocesan formation opportunities in the key principles of the new evangelization.
5.You will engage and motivate the parishes of your assigned region to participate in a comprehensive implementation of the new evangelization, as well as carefully discerned innovation and measured assessments.
6. “The Church is an evangelizer, but she begins by being evangelized herself” (EN, 15), therefore you will encourage the parishes to evangelize first the practicing yet lukewarm Catholics (i.e., evangelizing from the pews out).
7.You will work with existing evangelization ministries and if needed help initiate new ones at the parish, vicariate and regional level. You will coordinate effective and appropriate evangelization strategies for targeted parishes and schools in urban, suburban and rural areas, and help provide resources to support these ministries.
8.You will promote best practices in the new evangelization aimed at reaching out to inactive Catholics and other Christians that have abandoned their faith.
9.You will help pastor’s focus on a mission outreach to non-Christians inside your assigned region.
10.You will assist parishes in identifying persons with the charism for evangelization and in forming evangelization committees that serve as catalysts for the total evangelizing efforts of the parish.
11.You will encourage parishes to move from maintenance to mission, including the development of mission driven goals and objectives as relating to the Pastoral Plan.
12.You will help individuals and parishes discern and become good stewards of their gifts and charisms.
13.You will attend staff meetings as required.
14.You will prioritize and implement the above tasks with the Associate Director and the Director of the Office of Evangelization, Catechesis and Schools.
