JOB DESCRIPTION
NAME: POSITION TITLE: Pastoral Assistant for
High School Youth Ministry
GRADE: 12 – exempt REPORTS TO: Pastor
I. POSITION PURPOSE
The purpose of this position is to build and implement the parish’s youth ministry program in a comprehensive manner. This includes the elements of catechesis, evangelization, social action, community building, spirituality, liturgy, guidance, enablement and advocacy.
Further, the position collaborates with the Pastor and other staff in implementing the mission of the parish. This is accomplished by participating in the comprehensive planning, implementation and evaluation of parish goals and objectives, with specific focus on youth ministry.
II. MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
A. Presents the Catholic faith to parish youth, drawing on a variety of resources, and encourages their growth through the study of and participation in scripture, prayer, fellowship and service.
B. Develops and implements ministry programs and activities that engage high school youth and in conjunction with the Middle School Youth Minister, middle school youth. This should include but not be limited to Sunday evening programs, planning meetings, Bible studies, small faith sharing groups, retreats, conferences, leadership camps, mission projects, socials, recreation, athletic activities and community service opportunities. Coordinates teaching responsibilities on Sunday evenings. Assists in overseeing the administration of these programs, including publicity, organization and implementation.
C. Provides on-going faith-formation opportunities for youth. The Pastoral Assistant for Youth Ministry accomplishes this by organizing liturgical celebrations for youth and by creating opportunities where young people can experience God in their lives. This mainly involves the Sunday evening 5:00pm Youth Mass. Works with the Pastor and Pastoral Assistant for Music and Liturgy to plan and implement these liturgies. Organizes and provides training opportunities for teens as liturgical ministers. Also coordinates opportunities for youth to participate in a variety of prayer experiences and reconciliation.
D. Recruits and trains volunteers to implement faith-formation programs for youth. Incumbent recruits, enables, directs, trains and supervises catechists and other personnel as required for specific youth events and activities. Recruits and trains a core team of volunteers, to be part of the planning process and the organizational structure which will provide leadership and on-going coordination. Ensures all volunteers have met appropriate Safe Environment Program requirements.
E. Attends pastoral and general staff meetings on a regular basis including occasional retreats, trainings and socials and other parish events. Serves as a resource to staff in the matters of middle school youth ministry. Collaborates as appropriate in regional or deanery planning and program efforts.
F. Develops and implements a catechetical process to prepare youth of the parish and their families for the reception of the sacrament of Confirmation. Responsibilities include recruitment, training, motivation and support of parish volunteers necessary to accomplish the goals and objectives of the Confirmation Preparation Program.
G. Invites, trains, and supports parents and sponsors of youth preparing for the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist. Develops and implements RCIA for youth (grades 9-12) in preparation for the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist. Develops and implements a catechetical process to prepare youth of the parish (grades 9-12) and their families for the reception of Reconciliation and Eucharist.
H. Maintains a level of knowledge and skills required to function as a Pastoral Assistant for Youth Ministry. This is accomplished by regular updating through reading and attendance at relevant workshops and conventions. Will also participate in regional, Archdiocesan and national professional organizations as appropriate.
I. Provides information on viable community resources for teens and parents in crisis. Is responsible for networking with school counselors serving the youth of the parish. Makes referrals for youth and families in need of counseling and other forms of assistance.
J. Prepares and submits the budget for youth ministry in a timely manner. Monitors income and expenses on a monthly basis and authorizes all expenditures within that budget. Maintains accurate and confidential record-keeping systems.
K. Assists the Faith Formation staff in providing faith opportunities for teens during parish wide events including but not limited to: whole community catechesis events, parish workshops and missions.
L. Directs ministerial outreach to parish youth including youth not currently participating in youth ministry activities. This includes being accessible during office hours, at parish events, youth liturgies and at various other events according to program priorities
M. Works in collaboration with the Middle School Youth Minister and the Administrative Assistant for Youth Ministry.
N. There may be other duties related to the overall mission of the parish, and not included on this description assigned by the Pastor. (123)
