Third Sunday of Lent

“And he said to the vinedresser, ‘Lo, these three years I have come seeking fruit on this fig tree, and I find none. Cut it down; why should it use up the ground?’ And he answered him, ‘Let it alone, sir, this year also, till I dig about it and put on manure. And if it bears fruit next year, well and good; but if not, you can cut it down’” (Luke 13:7-9). [1]

Today is the third Sunday of Lent. Our Lenten journey is nearing the halfway mark. At the beginning of Lent, the liturgy proclaimed remaining victorious despite temptation. Last week, encouragement came by hearing that faith brings transformation. In today’s Gospel reading, we learn about God’s merciful patience. The vine tree is given more time to bear fruit and a tender vinedresser is present to nurture its growth. Paradoxically though, the passage ends with a warning. A gentle reminder we see echoed in Corinthians when St. Paul writes, ‘Therefore, let anyone who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall’ (1Cor. 10:12). Our responsibility regarding conversion and reconciliation is highlighted. As we participate in this communal Lenten journey, may we be encouraged that by our faith in combination with God’s love and mercy – a new life in Christ shall be ours at Easter. [2][3]
