October 9, 2008
Washington, D.C. (MetroCatholic) – The Knights of Columbus presented the colors Oct. 5 at the annual Red Mass at the Cathedral of Saint Matthew in Washington, D.C.
Archbishop Donald Wuerl of Washington (pictured with U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts ) was the principal celebrant. Cardinal John Cardinal Foley, left, grand master of the Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem, was the homilist.
Also attending were Supreme Court Justices Antonin Scalia, Anthony Kennedy, Clarence Thomas and Stephen Breyer. Government officials, ambassadors, and members of the legal community also attended.
The Red Mass is celebrated annually prior to the opening of the Supreme Court’s session.
The liturgy takes its name from the red vestments worn, and from the ritual invocation of the Holy Spirit for blessings of wisdom and guidance.
