Midmorning Prayer for Friday after Epiphany, using Complementary Psalmody

God, come to my assistance.
– Lord, make haste to help me.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:
– as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia.

HYMN

In voi porro il mio Spirito e vivrete,
ritornerete al luogo del riposo;
l’ho detto e lo faro: sono il Signore,
risuscito il mio popolo Israele.

S’e addormentato Lazzaro, l’amico,
ed io vado a svegliarlo dalla morte.
Lo destero perché anche voi crediate
che in me c’e la pienezza della vita.

Io grido dal profondo a te, Signore,
ascolta il mio lamento, io ti chiamo;
distogli dal tuo volto le mie colpe,
tu sei la mia difesa, Dio pietoso.

Lo Spirito di Dio dimora in voi,
non siete piu nel regno della morte;
il corpo e morto a causa del peccato,

English translation

I will put my Spirit in you and you will live,
you will be returned to the place of rest;
I have said it and I will do it:
I, the Lord, who rescued my people Israel.

Lazarus my friend is asleep,
and I am going to wake him up from the dead.
You also will awaken him because you believe in me, the fullness of life.

I cry from the depths to you,
O Lord, hear my lament, I call out to you;
turn away your face from my sins, you are my defense, O merciful God.

The Spirit of God dwells in you,
you are no longer in the kingdom of death;
the body is dead because of sin,
but I have raised the Savior.

Take away the stone from the Tomb,
I will show you the glory of my Father:
who brought back Lazarus to the kingdom of light;
Whosoever believes in me, though he be dead, shall live.

Psalm 120
Longing for peace
Be patient in suffering, be constant in prayer (Romans 12:12)

To the Lord in the hour of my distress
I call and he answers me.
O Lord, save my soul from lying lips,
from the tongue of the deceitful.

What shall he repay you in return,
O treacherous tongue?
The warriors arrows sharpened
and coals, red-hot, blazing.

Alas, that I abide a stranger in Meshech,
dwell among the tents of Kedar!

Long enough have I been dwelling
with those who hate peace.
I am for peace, but when I speak,
they are for fighting.

Psalm 121
Guardian of his people
Never again will they hunger and thirst, never again know scorching heat (Revelation 7:16)

I lift up my eyes to the mountains;
from where shall come my help?
My help shall come from the Lord
who made heaven and earth.

May he never allow you to stumble!
Let him sleep not, your guard.
No, he sleeps not nor slumbers,
Israel’s guard.

The Lord is your guard and your shade;
at your right side he stands.
By day the sun shall not smite you
nor the moon in the night.

The Lord will guard you from evil,
he will guard your soul.
The Lord will guard your going and coming
both now and for ever.

Psalm 122
The holy city, Jerusalem
You have come to Mount Zion, to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem (Hebrews 12:22)

I lift up my eyes to the mountains;
I rejoiced when I heard them say:
Let us go to God’s house.
And now our feet are standing
within your gates, O Jerusalem.

Jerusalem is built as a city
strongly compact.
It is there that the tribes go up,
the tribes of the Lord.

For Israel’s law it is,
there to praise the Lord’s name.
There were set the thrones of judgment
of the house of David.

For the peace of Jerusalem pray:
“Peace be to your homes!
May peace reign in your walls,
in your palaces, peace!”

For love of my brethren and friends
I say: Peace upon you.
For love of the house of the Lord
I will ask for your good.

READING Jeremiah 31:7-8

Shout with joy for Jacob,
exult at the head of the nations;
proclaim your praise and say:
The Lord has delivered his people,
the remnant of Israel.
Behold, I will bring them back
from the land of the north;
I will gather them from the ends of the world.

A moment to reflect and receive in our hearts the full resonance of the voice of the Holy Spirit and to unite our personal prayer more closely with the word of God and public voice of the Church.

He was seen on the earth
– He was a man among men.

CONCLUDING PRAYER

Grant, we ask, almighty God,
that the Nativity of the Savior of the world,
made known by the guidance of a star,
may be revealed ever more fully to our minds.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.
– Amen.
