The Office of Youth and Young Adult Evangelization of the Archdiocese of Seattle has an opening for a full-time Executive Director. This opening is to fill a vacant position.
The Archbishop is the visible principle and foundation of unity in the particular Church entrusted to him. In a unique and visible way, he makes Christ’s mission present and enduring as Shepherd of the Christian Community. In order to fulfill his mission, the Archbishop employs suitable, chosen collaborators (clerics, religious, or lay people). He shares with them the apostolic mission and entrusts various responsibilities to them. (Directory on the Pastoral Ministry of Bishops, 198)
Each position employed in the Chancery helps to extend the ministry of the Archbishop in particular ways as outlined in the position description.
GENERAL SUMMARY OF ESSENTIAL PURPOSE:
The Archbishop’s Executive Director for Youth and Young Adult Evangelization assures the development, organization, and administration of goals and objectives, policies and procedures for the Office for Youth and Young Adult Evangelization in accord with the mission and norms of the local and universal Church. The Office for Youth and Young Adult Evangelization includes five areas: Youth Ministry, Young Adult Ministry, Athletics, Camp Services and Camp Facilities
NOTE: This is an appointed position by the Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Seattle and subject to Archdiocesan Policy pertaining to appointed positions. The Archbishop reserves the right to make modifications to the position description at his discretion and in accord with the provisions of canon law.
ESSENTIAL POSITION DUTIES:
A. Ensures that all Archdiocesan youth and young adult ministry efforts extend the ministry of the Archbishop, are grounded in a theology of Communio, include the cultural diversity of our local Church, and are accessible to each and every parish and faith community.
B. Assures that the leadership development plans for Youth Ministry, Young Adult Ministry, Athletics, Camp Services and Camp Facilities are fully developed, supported, articulated and communicated to all its constituents.
C. Develops and regularly updates a department pastoral plan for ministry to youth and young adult that actively enhances Catholic identity and reflects the priorities of the Archdiocese of Seattle. Develops policies and guidelines for programs that target youth and young adults within the Archdiocese. Establishes effective systems of communication and outreach so that all Archdiocesan youth and young adult ministry efforts reach each of our parishes and faith communities, with a particular commitment to increasing involvement within our cultural and ethnic communities.
D. Works with pastors and other pastoral leaders, Pastoral Assistants for Youth Ministry and volunteer youth and young adult ministry leaders in our parish and faith communities to be a resource with them in their evangelization of the youth and young adults of Western Washington and to ensure quality ministry to youth and young adults by providing ongoing support and training.
E. Provides the provision of support to all consultative groups and to planning/implementation groups of Youth Ministry, Young Adult Ministry, Athletics, and Camp Services.
F. Provides oversight of the Archdiocesan sponsored campus ministries at the University of Washington and Western Washington University and expand outreach to Catholic student leadership within all institution of higher learning within the Archdiocese.
G. Assures ongoing support to all special events occurring and all service programming offered by Youth Ministry, Young Adult Ministry, Athletics and Camp Services.
H. Assures effective stewardship of the Office of Youth and Young Adult Evangelization through supervision of staff, administration of the department’s budget, and administration of the office in accordance with the Archdiocesan policy.
a. Willingness and ability to support the mission of the Church by extending the ministry of the Archbishop, most specially to the youth and families of the Church in Western Washington.
b. Ability and desire to use God-given gifts and talents in service of the local Church in support of the collaboration between lay and ordained Ministers.
c. Active member of a parish/faith community in good standing with the Church.
a. Masters degree in Religious Studies, Theology or related field, preferred. Comparable equivalent work experience will be considered.
a. Demonstrated successful leadership/management experience to include staff supervision, program management and budget management.
b. Demonstrated successful experience in youth and/or young adult ministry or faith formation.
c. Demonstrated success in directing a comprehensive development and administration of youth and young adult programs.
d. Demonstrated experience in facilitating group processes enabling and motivating people to accomplish goals through team organization.
4. Other Elements:
a. Knowledge of and compatibility with the mission of the Catholic Church, and strong working knowledge of the Catholic parish structures and organizations, the Church’s ministerial and pastoral work, and Catholic identity.
b. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written, with demonstrated ability to facilitate meetings, conduct oral presentations, and write documents and/or reports.
c. Demonstrated ability to enable staff to accomplish goals through collaboration, collegiality and team organization.
d. Understanding and commitment to this position as a ministry, not merely a job.
e. Ability to work evenings and weekends, and availability to the Archbishop at all times.
f. Ability to work with people of various economic, racial and cultural backgrounds.
g. Bilingual competency (English/Spanish), preferred.
h. Possession of a valid Washington State driver’s license.
