EWTN Priests Learn the Latin Mass
November 24, 2008
CHICAGO, IL (MetroCatholic) – The Franciscan Missionaries of the Eternal Word, based in the Diocese of Birmingham, Alabama, recently sent two of their priests to the Canons Regular of St. John Cantius in Chicago to learn to celebrate the Traditional Latin Mass.
The Franciscan Missionaries of the Eternal Word were founded in 1987, by Mother Mary Angelica, PCPA, who also founded the Eternal Word Television Network.
Fr. Joseph who serves in Irondale, AL, at the EWTN studios, and Fr. Miguel, who is stationed at the Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament in Hanceville, Alabama, where Mother Angelica and the Poor Clare Nuns are cloistered, came to St. John Cantius ready to work intensely on the rubrics and ceremonies of the Traditional Latin Mass, referred to by Benedict as the “Extraordinary Form.”
Each day Fr. Joseph and Fr. Miguel took the opportunity to study and observe the various forms of the Traditional Latin Mass with the Canons Regular of St. John Cantius.
They attended Low Mass, High Mass, High Mass with Incense, Requiem High Mass with Incesnse and the Absolution over the Catafalque, Nuptial High Mass, Baptisms as well as Solemn High Mass and Solemn High Requiem Mass.
Since the Summer of 2007 the Canons Regular of St. John Cantius have trained almost 175 priests to celebrate the Extraordinary Form of the Mass through the “Sancta Missa Latin Mass Workshops.”
Future workshops are planned for the Winter and Spring of 2009 to be held on the campus of Mundelein Seminary at the Cardinal Stritch Retreat House. See: http://www.sanctamissa.org/workshops/for-priests/
After one week of intense instruction with the Canons Regular of St. John Cantius these priests began to offer Low Mass in the Extraordinary Form. In a short time they were able to offer the High Mass.
They studied certain variations in the celebration of Mass, such as the differences that pertain to the Requiem Mass, Ember days, Rogation days, and Passiontide, and they have each offered Requiem Low Mass.
Priests who are interested to learn Low Mass or High Mass should enroll in the SANCTAMISSA WORKSHOPS offered periodically by the Canons Regular of St. John Cantius. Visit this link for details: http://www.sanctamissa.org/workshops/for-priests/
The next Priest-Seminarian Training Workshop is offered at the Cardinal Stritch Retreat House on the campus of Chicago’s Mundelein Seminary from February 9 – 13 , 2009.
In the final week of training for the priests from the Franciscan Missionaries of the Eternal Word ending November 21st, Fr. Miguel offered his first Solemn High Mass according to the 1962 Missale Romanum. Fr. Scott Haynes, SJC, served as Deacon and Fr. Joseph served as Subdeacon. The brothers of the Canons Regular of St. John Cantius served and sang for the special Mass.
Rev. C. Frank Phillips, Founder of the Canons Regular of St. John Cantius delivered the homily at Fr. Miguel’s First Solemn Mass on the Feast of St. Elizabeth of Hungary.
Also in attendance was Fr. David McLeod of the Military Archdiocese of Canada, who sat in choir for the Solemn Mass. Fr. McLeod arrived recently to study the celebration of the Extraordinary Form under the tutelage of Fr. Bartholomew Juncer, S.J.C.
On Friday, November 21, 2008, Fr. Joseph offered his first Solemn Mass according to the 1962 Missale Romanum. Fr. Miguel served as Subdeacon and Fr. Scott served as Deacon.
To thank the Blessed Mother, who is the mother of all priests, for the rich graces bestowed upon these priests learning the Traditional Latin Mass, Solemn Vespers in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary was chanted in Latin from the 1962 Liber Usualis. Fr. Scott Haynes, S.J.C. was the celebrant and Fr. Joseph and Fr. Miguel served as coped assistants.

Got something to say?
I have so enjoyed the daily masses on EWTN since I have moved from my home in a Catholic run (with Chapel) Assisted Living Facility. I am 82, have no car and really find it difficult to get to Mass at the local Church. I watch daily, sometimes twice if I am in my apartment. I, of course, miss Communion, but have wondered if I am fulfilling my obligation by attending these TV Masses. It does worry me that I am not getting to Church proper, but these Masses on EWTN are wonderful and I am enjoying being in their TV audience. I have even started using my old missal from about 1966 to follow the Latin. Can you please let me know if I am, indeed, fulfilling my obligatioin to my Catholic faith.
Thank you for your help. Betty Frederick
Betty, Please try posting this question over on the forum at http://www.catholic.com. They have plenty of people there that can assist you with your question. I do not want to lead you in the wrong direction and feel they will be better equipped to respond. God bless you for your devotion to the faith and thank you for visiting our site.

Betty, the main question is whether or not you are actually able to get to Weekly (Sunday or Vigil) Mass and on Holy Days of obligation.
There is no obligation for weekday Mass, but encouraged.
If you are able to “get to” Sunday Mass, you are obligated to do so.
I also encourage you to contact your local Parish.
(1) They may be able to help you get to Mass
(2) They may also be able to bring Holy Communion to you on a regular basis
At first, I say thants to Mother Angelica for her ” Fiat ” to God , giving to us EWTN.
May the Lord bless her always.
Congretulations to Frs. Joseph and Miguel for their accomplishment..
And I cannot wait to whatch at Ewtn, a high Mass extraordinairy form .
Why not sometimes low latin mass or so very often ?
Thank You
I am pleased to be able to watch EWTN’s broadcast of the Daily Mass.
I’m almost a cradle
l Episcopalian and attend church regularly but I have
feelings for the Catholic faith.
Are the young men who attend at the services called acolytes, or are they
seminarians of some sort? I’m always impressed by the quick, sure way
they perform their duties at the services. I like the older man (with a mustache)
who is almost always there.
I assume that is a Deacon who sits quietly most of the time at the side of the
Priest or Priests who are in charge. He is very patient and attentive.
I cannot convert because I’m divorced but I most certainly appreciate even this
small glimpse.

Marjorie,
Since you made the comment “I cannot convert”, that must be something you would like to do.
I encourage you to discuss the matter with a local priest. While the Church does not condone divorce, that of itself is not a hinderance to full communion.
It would not hurt or make the matter any worse to try.
God bless.
Betty, a confessor once told me that the daily mass at EWTN is valid so long as the intent and sincerity are there. The validity, of course applies for those who can not physically be able to hear mass in church. Sone parishes would gladly send a priest or a eucharistic minister to give holy communion, although not timed as the mass you are attending on EWTN.
I absorbed Fr, Joseph Mary:’s homily about life s sufferings Feb 1,2010!!!!!
I would love to have a written ciopy of this homily to read abd reread and perhaps pass it on to any others who might pay heed.
I hve encountered many medical incidents. My myocardial infarction in 2003 with 3 back abd forths to ICU and then being sent to i carduac rehab…..while at rehab, my hsband suffered a massive CVA. Our hospital and rehab have an adjoining lobby. Thank you God. For my daughters were able to take me to see him while I was at cardiac rfehab. After ll days on the ventilator, we took him home to die.
That was my traged!I
I was on a ventilator for ten days this past fall; hospitalized for 2 1/2 mobths.
Father:’s homily gave me some insight. How can I get a writteb copy?
RSVP. I thank you.
God Bless you all at EWTN.
