Dominican University presents symposium on Pope Benedict XVI’s recent encyclical

RIVER FOREST, IL (MetroCatholic) – Dominican University’s Center for Global Peace through Commerce and the Siena Center will present a half-day symposium titled “Caritas in Veritate: Understanding Pope Benedict’s Vision for the Global Economy” on Friday, February 26 from 8:30 a.m. to noon at the Priory Campus, 7200 W. Division Street, River Forest. The symposium will feature Father J. Bryan Hehir, professor at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.
The symposium will examine Pope Benedict’s June 2009 encyclical, Caritas in Veritate, and what it means for global companies. The symposium will focus on social entrepreneurship—the “third path” in the business world which measures a business’s success not only on its profit return but also on its societal impact.
Hehir, who will give the morning keynote session, is the Parker Gilbert Montgomery Professor of the Practice of Religion and Public Life at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. He is also the secretary for social services in the Archdiocese of Boston and the former president and CEO of Catholic Charities USA. His work and writings have focused on ethics and foreign policy, Catholic social ethics, and the role of religion in world politics and in American society. His books include: The Moral Measurement of War: A Tradition of Continuity and Change; Military Intervention and National Sovereignty; Catholicism and Democracy; and Social Values and Public Policy: A Contribution from a Religious Tradition.
The symposium will also include two breakout sessions. Nancy Jones, director of Chicago Fair Trade, and Jennifer Moran, proprietor of Solidarity Clothing and Greenola, will present one breakout session. Professors from the Brennan School of Business, Jeff Bell, clinical assistant professor of management, and Liz Collier, assistant professor of ethics, will present the other breakout session.

Dominican University established the Siena Center to engage the critical issues of church and society in the light of faith and scholarship. The center was named for St. Catherine of Siena, a 14th century laywoman who worked for the reform of the church and justice in the world. Her passionate devotion to the central issues of church and society inspires the work of the center in its schedule of lectures, symposia, workshops, retreats, research and seminars.
