DIRECTOR OF WORSHIP AND MUSIC

Holy Family Parish (Caledonia, MI)
Position Title: Parish Director of Worship and Music Ministry
Reports To: Pastor
Status: Full-time; exempt
Primary Function of the Position: Responsible for facilitating the worship life of the parish
community by coordinating the acts of worship with the Pastor and other of the pastoral staff.
Major Position Responsibilities:
Works collaboratively with the Pastor and other members of staff to promote “full,
conscious and active participation” in Catholic worship, especially, but not exclusively,
at Holy Family Catholic Church.
Identifies, recruits and is responsible for the training and scheduling of parish
volunteers for all the Liturgical Ministries.
Directs the Music Program of the Parish, including the selection of music for all
celebrations, and serves as Choir Director.
Works directly with cantors, psalmists, musicians, and other Liturgical Ministries, to
grow in the knowledge and appreciation of their ministry.
Works with the Business Manager to create an annual budget for worship and
oversees that budget.
Coordinates the publishing of worship aids and other booklets as required.
Leads music and plays organ or piano at weekday Mass, Wednesday through Friday.
Maintains professional competence through regular attendance at continuing
education for both Liturgy and Liturgical music; studies various liturgical/music
documents and publications toward ongoing formation.
Oversees the aesthetic decor of the worship space, is responsible for the Sacred
Vessels, and the vestments, and the purchase of missalettes and other resources.
Other duties as required.
Practicing Roman Catholic. He or she should demonstrate a mature Catholic faith.
Bachelor’s degree in music and/or Liturgy-Master’s preferred.
Proficient in playing organ and piano.
The nature of this position requires presences at Sunday Worship, including Saturday Mass
of Anticipation, Holy Days of Obligation, holidays, funerals and weddings. Office hours
during normal business hours are expected, as well as participation in staff meetings. This
position will work collaboratively with the Pastor, as well as with other members of the
Parish Director of Worship and Music Ministry
As Director of Worship
< Helps the Parish grow in appreciation of the Liturgy and importance of singing as
part of the act of worship.
< Provides for periodic objective evaluation of the liturgical celebrations.
< Orders supplies need for liturgical and other worship services.
< Assist in the preparation process for couples seeking marriage at Holy Family.
< Develops and implements a long-range plan for liturgical education in keeping with
the long-range goals of the Parish.
< Collaborates with other parish staff members to provide assistance or consultation
for their liturgical needs.
As Director of Music Ministry
< Directs and leads rehearsals of cantors, psalmists, instrumentalists, and choirs,
including adult, children’s, and high school choirs, with assistance as needed and
< Assists couples preparing for marriage with their choices of hymns and other music,
in accordance with teachings and norms of the Catholic Church, United States
Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), and Diocese of Grand Rapids.
< Directly contacts families who are preparing funerals to assist them with choices of
< Oversees the purchase of new music and musical instruments.
< Organizes and maintains liturgical/music files, and subscriptions, including all
licenses connected with liturgical celebrations.
< Provides for substitutes when personally unavailable.
