St. John Bosco Parish, staffed by the Salesians of St. John Bosco, serves the immigrant community of the Belmont-Cragin section of northwest Chicago. We seek to live the Gospel following the spirit of Don Bosco, founder of the Salesian Family, which has as its main charism is the evangelization of poor and abandoned youth. The DRE position is a vital part of this mission. We serve almost 800 students, with sessions that run during the week and on the weekends. Candidates should be fully initiated Catholics, who actively participate in the life of the Church. A masters degree or some certification in religious education is preferred. Administrative experience is important, as is an ability to work with people. Fluency in Spanish is essential.
Responsibilities include overseeing the recruitment, training, ongoing formation and evaluation of catechists and other catechetical personnel. Our program includes sacramental preparation for children, RCIA for adults and children of catechetical age, as well as weekly faith formation for the parents of our students. The DRE also has periodic parent meetings. We have the SPREAD program for special needs children. The DRE assures the catechists’ compliance with safe environment standards and keeps those records. The DRE helps organize other devotional and cultural activities of the parish in union with the pastoral staff and small groups of the parish. Work hours run afternoon, evenings and weekends.
