The Office of Advancement is seeking a Director of Major Gifts who will be responsible for identifying, cultivating and soliciting major gift prospects for the Diocese of Richmond as part of the Living Our Mission campaign. The Director of Major Gifts will work as part of a professional team to raise a minimum of $65 million to help advance the mission of the Diocese of Richmond. S/he will have direct contact with top major gift prospects, key diocesan leadership, including Bishop DiLorenzo, lay leaders and pastors. Responsibilities and tasks include: Develop and execute solicitation strategies including presenting proposals to support key campaign initiatives; conduct ongoing cultivation of assigned major gift prospects through ongoing correspondence; assist in planning, coordinating and executing all major gift initiatives for the campaign; serve as a liaison with Pastors and Parish Campaign Directors regarding major gift solicitation at the diocesan and parish level; assist with prospect research and utilization of Raisers Edge database to identify additional major gift prospects and refine the data on those that already exist; make timely contact reports on visits and add pertinent information to the database.
Bachelor’s degree and 5 years of experience in fund development or sales. Experience in major gift development, working on capital campaigns or corporate solicitation are required.
Candidate must have excellent written, oral and interpersonal communication skills, especially competent in public speaking. Proven track record of relationship management and communication with a diverse group of people in an atmosphere of collaboration and service. Successful record of meeting goals, deadlines and budgets. The ideal candidate will have a professional and resourceful style with the ability to work independently and as a team player, to take initiative and manage multiple tasks and projects. Proficiency in the use of computers, especially MS office, database systems and Raiser’s Edge. Possess an enthusiasm for working in a Catholic Church environment, and a depth of understanding regarding principles related to stewardship and generosity.
This position requires travel with the Diocese of Richmond to meet with leadership candidates and develop relationships. It also requires attendance at meetings and business related events during and after business hours. An understanding and enthusiasm for the Catholic Church’s mission are required to perform this job at a high level.
