DIRECTOR OF LITURGICAL MUSIC

Holy Name of Jesus Parish (Chickasha, OK)

The Liturgical Music Director uses musical performance, educational skills, and interpersonal training to produce appropriate liturgical music so that the worship of God may fulfill its purposes, lead to a more complete conversion of the parish to the Lord, and glorify God through beauty.

Area of Responsibility: Music Planning
Description: The Liturgical Music Director coordinates, advises, and selects the musical pieces used in the various liturgical functions of the parish so that the music used conforms to the needs of the congregation and the expectations of the Church’s rubrics.
1.) Plan music for the Sunday Masses (weekly)
2.) Plan music for the Holy Days of Obligation (annually)
3.) Plan music for the privileged seasons of Advent, Lent, Christmas, and Easter (annually)
4.) Plan music for other liturgical celebrations (as needed)
5.) Assist families in preparing music for funerals (as needed)
6.) Assist couples in preparing music for weddings (as needed)
7.) Assist families in preparing music for quinceneras (as needed)
Possible Projects:
1.) Work with committee to select new hymnals for the English congregation (completed in June-July 2015)
2.) Create a worksheet to assist families to make funeral arrangements (completed in June-July 2015)

Area of Responsibility: Choir Director
Description: The Liturgical Music Director recruits, develops, and encourages the parishioners of Holy Name to share their musical talents so that they may glorify God through participation in the choir.
1.) Direct choir during Sunday Mass and other occasions (weekly: September – May, and as needed)
2.) Conduct rehearsals with English choir (weekly: September – May)
3.) Conduct rehearsals with Spanish Youth choir (weekly: September – May)
4.) Recruit new members for the English choir (annually)
5.) Recruit new members for the Spanish youth choir (annually)
6.) Conduct rehearsals for English and Spanish Cantors (as needed, usually weekly)
7.) Recruit new cantors for English and Spanish choirs (as needed, usually weekly)
Possible Projects:
1.) Expand English Adult Choir by 10 – 20% (completed in June-July 2015)
2.) Expand Spanish Youth Choir by 5 – 10 % (completed in June-July 2015)
3.) Create an English Youth Choir (completed in June-July 2015)
4.) Create a Spanish Adult Choir (completed in June-July 2015)
5.) Recruit 1-3 Spanish Cantors (completed in June-July 2015)

Area of Responsibility: Music Education
Description: The Liturgical Music Director evaluates, instructs, and prepares the parishioners of Holy Name in order to develop the musical repertoire of the community.
1.) Teach New Responses to the Congregation (as needed)
2.) Teach new pieces of music to the Congregation (as needed)
3.) Keep a up-to-date list of music that the Congregation and Choir know well (annually)
4.) Develop the vocal skills of choir and cantors (annually/as needed)
Possible Projects:
1.) Prepare the Congregation (both English and Spanish) to use the Latin Novus Ordo Mass Settings (completed by June-July 2015)
2.) Teach the Congregation proper form and use of plain chant within the Mass. (completed by June-July 2015)

Area of Responsibility: Musical Performance
Description: The Liturgical Music Director presents, performs and executes excellent music performances so that the good of beauty may be readily present in the Church’s liturgy.
1.) Play organ and/or piano for Sunday Masses (weekly)
2.) Play organ and/or piano for the Holy Days of Obligation (annually)
3.) Play organ and/or piano for the privileged seasons of Advent, Lent, Christmas, and Easter (annually)
4.) Play organ and/or piano for other liturgical celebrations (as needed)
5.) Play organ and/or piano for funerals (as needed)
6.) Play organ and/or piano for weddings (as needed)
7.) Play organ and/or piano for quinceneras (as needed)
8.) Coordinate and supervise guest musicians (as needed)
9.) Maintains a high quality of performance through practices and professional development (as needed)

Area of Responsibility: Sound Equipment/Musical Instrument Maintenance
Description: The Liturgical Music Director oversees, maintains, and utilizes the sound equipment and musical instruments of the parish in order to keep parish resources in good working order.
1.) Schedule tuning of organ and piano at regular intervals (usually quarterly)
2.) Schedule repair/replacement of damaged sound equipment (as needed)
3.) Advises pastor on necessary and suggested upgrades to current sound equipment (as needed)
4.) Operates sound system when visiting priests or musicians are present (as needed)

Required Credentials:
Candidates should be bilingual
Candidates must have a degree in music performance or related field
Candidates must be able to direct a choir from the organ or piano bench
Candidates must be able to play piano and pipe organ for performance and for congregational singing; ability to play guitar or other instruments a bonus
Candidates must have the ability to transpose music to appropriate keys for congregation and choir
Candidates should have comprehension of the Catholic liturgical history and tradition as it applies to music.
Candidates should be committed disciples of the Lord, demonstrating a good Christian witness in their deeds and outward comportment.
Previous experience is an asset but not required.

Compensation:
Starting salary negotiable
Medical and Dental Insurance
After one year of employment, eligibility for retirement benefits begin
2 weeks paid vacation per year (appropriate substitute must be arranged if absent for the weekend.)
1 week paid personal/sick leave (appropriate substitute must be arranged if absent for the weekend.) (82)
