Director of Institutional Advancement

Job Goal
The Director of Institutional Advancement reports directly to the President and works closely with the Board of Directors and other key volunteer leaders. This person is charged with creating the vision, mission, and strategy for the school’s marketing and development initiatives. A member of the senior management team, this person is responsible for the generation and management of major gifts, annual giving, capital campaigns, endowments, alumni relations, record keeping, and event coordination. In addition, the Director of Institutional Advancement safeguards the messaging of the institution by overseeing all marketing aspects of the school to current and prospective parents and students, benefactors, and the community at-large.

• Deep appreciation for the Catholic faith and a commitment to the teachings of the Church
• Demonstrated ability to plan and operate strategically, build public support, strengthen infrastructure, inspire staff and the Board of Directors, and to develop effective programs
• Exceptional organizational and administrative skills
• Strong communication skills, both interpersonal and in written form, in order to forge strong relationships with staff, board members, alumni, and benefactors
• Proven leadership skills and an aptitude for guiding and mentoring direct reports
• Impeccable attention to detail
• Familiarity with database software (Raiser’s Edge preferred)
• Quantifiable success in development in the areas of donor segmentation, research, and cultivation

Education/Experience
• B.A. in related field (M.A. preferred)
• Five years experience in fundraising with individuals and/or corporations
• Five years senior management experience, preferably with direct stewardship of a board of directors

Primary Responsibilities
Development
• Sixty to seventy percent (60-70%) of daily functions are external actions such as fundraising, cultivating and maintaining relationships, increasing awareness of the school’s mission, and recruiting friends, ambassadors and donors for the school
• Ensures that philanthropy and advancement initiatives are carried out in a manner consistent with the values and mission of JSerra
• Creates a comprehensive development plan that identifies prospects, donors, and community partners in order to enhance the short and long-term funding base of the school
• Manages and broadens a robust major and planned gifts program for corporations, foundations, and alumni parents and students
• Assesses and mentors the advancement personnel to ensure that the organization is effectively structured and staffed with competent employees
• Oversees performance measures, monitors results, and assists the President and the Board of Directors in evaluating the effectiveness of the school’s advancement program
• Supports the Board of Directors in determining measures of accountability for its members and volunteers and helps to regularly evaluate their performance
• Teams with the Chief Financial Officer to guarantee sound fiscal operation of the advancement office – i.e. timely and accurate tracking and acknowledgement of all charitable contributions and diligent oversight of income and expense budgets
• Oversees the design and maintenance of donor prospect records, gift tracking systems, and management reports
• Approves all fundraising activities of the school and coordinates a master calendar of these events
• Serves as a member of the Advancement Committee of the Board of Directors
Secondary Responsibilities
Marketing
• Thirty to forty percent (30-40%) of daily functions are internal actions related to the promotion of the school via marketing campaigns, community events, print or electronic advertisements, and web-site development
• Oversees publication of all school communication (both print and electronic form) to ensure that a consistent brand is maintained that aligns with the school’s mission and strategic goals
• Provides oversight of the ongoing creation of content for the school’s web-site and various social media vehicles
• Works in close collaboration with Admissions to develop initiatives that promote the school and enhance its image
• Builds and maintains relationships with the larger San Juan Capistrano community (e.g. city council, corporate sponsors, local press)
• Serves as a member of the Marketing Committee of the Board of Directors
