Duquesne University seeks nominations and applications for the position of Director of Freshman Development and Special Student Services with a planned start date of January 2, 2014. The individual we seek will direct programs and services for freshmen and students with special needs. This position reports to the Executive Vice President for Student Life and works under the day-to-day supervision of the Assistant Vice President for Student Life. The Office of Freshman Development and Special Student Services works closely with the Center for Student Involvement, Commuter Affairs, Residence Life and Academic Advisors.
The Director will oversee programs including Freshman Orientation, Freshman Mentor Program, Freshman weekend activity series; advise various freshman student organizations; and maintain communication with parents. He/she will assess new student involvement and the overall changing student needs and interests.
The Director will monitor freshman academic performance and retention; provide oversight for the coordination of care given to freshmen of concern or at risk; and communicate with Residence Life and Commuter Affairs to ensure that freshmen students are receiving the support they need.
The Director will assist students with special needs in securing appropriate accommodations. He/she will also act as a liaison to assist these students in communicating their needs to faculty, physical plant, and other areas of the university community.
The successful candidate will have earned a Master’s degree in higher education administration, counseling, or related field of study. A minimum of five years progressively responsible experience in freshman development and special student services is strongly preferred. Knowledge of current practices, legal issues, ADA requirements, trends in higher education student affairs and the ability to lead, manage and motivate professional and support staff are also required. The ability to effectively engage students, faculty, and staff and the ability to articulate the Mission and identity of Duquesne University in providing education in the Spiritan tradition is essential.
