Peninsula Catholic High School, Newport News, VA
Purpose: The Director of Development is charged with organizing and implementing a comprehensive advancement program to support the overall mission and goals of the school.
Supervisor Title: Principal
Responsibilities and Tasks: The Director of Development’s primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
Coordinate the annual giving campaign to include alumni, parents past parents, friends, and businesses; prepare multiple giving solicitations each year
Oversee a Capital Campaign in all its aspects
Identify and cultivate major donors for the school, maintaining files of pertinent information and correspondence while exercising the highest level of confidentiality
Collaborate with Director of Marketing & Special Events who oversees special events, including those related to alumni, and coordinate marketing for various Development campaigns
Develop relationships with alumni and provide direction and support for all class reunions and opportunities to re-engage with the school; encourage visits to the campus
Maintain close communication with major donors, including coordinating frequent updates with named scholarship donors and their scholarship students
Manage the Development budget and meet fundraising goals
Collaborate with Director of Marketing & Special Events to ensure that the annual auction is in-line to meet annual fundraising goals
Continue to engage primary feeder schools (St. Mary Star of the Sea and Our Lady of Mt. Carmel) and coordinate occasional marketing projects to support the three schools’ efforts to promote the peninsula’s Catholic schools and therefore attract families and increase enrollment
Promote scholarship opportunities through connections of community organizations and marketing efforts, and cultivate donors for longterm named scholarships; promote the Virginia Education Improvements Tax Scholarship Program to businesses and individual donors
Maintain grant calendar and prepare and submit grants for capital and annual school projects
Attend area networking marketing meetings (Hampton Roads Catholic Schools Consortium, NetworkPeninsula, Bernardine Franciscan Sisters Foundation, etc.) and cultivate community relationships
Oversee and direct the overall presentation for the Knight Report and assist the Director of Marketing and Special Events in editing its contents and executing its publication
Prepare the Annual Report to be included in the summer Knight Report
Support and increase the school’s profile within the broader community
Administer social networking communication (i.e. Facebook, Twitter, etc.) related to alumni and other aspects associated with position
Oversee planning and execution of Founder’s Day/Alumni Weekend (October)
Prepare thank you/tax receipt letters for each donation; find multiple opportunities to acknowledge/thank donors for each donation including overseeing student thank you notes to supporters, personal phone calls, invitations to visit campus, etc.
Professional Qualifications: The Director of Development should have a minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in a related field and have significant experience in public relations and fundraising; a Master’s Degree is preferred. A minimum of three – five years experience in fundraising and development is strongly preferred. The ability to use general computer applications and the ability to work both in a team environment and independently are essential. Other qualifications include professional written and verbal communication skills, a positive attitude, efficiency, an ability to cultivate engaged relationships with all school constituents, a mindfulness for implementing positive nonprofit customer service techniques, and the ability to maintain tact and confidentiality. Familiarity with the ethical principles and standards of fundraising is important.
Certification: CFRE is desirable but not necessary.
