First Sunday in the Season of Advent

“And then they will see the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. Now when these things begin to take place, look up and raise your heads, because your redemption is drawing near,” (Lk 21:27-28).[1]

Today we celebrate the First Sunday of Advent and begin a new liturgical cycle, year C, which features the Gospel According to Luke. In today’s readings at Mass, we are reminded of Christ’s Second Coming, His return on the ‘last day.’ We are encouraged to reflect upon this event and look for ways to have it direct our daily actions. As we wait expectantly, we prepare to encounter our Lord and welcome the day when His justice, compassion, and joy will reign in all its fullness. [2]
