Catholic Families for America Calls on Catholic House Members to Oppose Health Care Bill

November 6, 2009

WASHINGTON, DC (Metrocatholic) –  With the vote on the House version of the health care reform bill (HR 3962) looming, today Catholic Families for America urged the 137 House members who are Catholic to reject the legislation, given its pro-abortion, anti-family elements.

“Those members of the House who are Catholic simply cannot justify, logically or morally, a vote for this legislation,” said Dr. Kevin Roberts, executive director of CFA. “The pro-abortion mandate is a crystal-clear violation of Church doctrine, and furthermore, the tax implications, especially for families, makes all of us with children worry about the future of our country.”

CFA has worked hard to educate voters nationwide about three broad areas of concern regarding the House bill: (1) the abortion provisions; (2) how the legislation undermines an individual’s or a family’s right to determine what insurance coverage they should have, thereby expanding the “Nanny State”; and (3) the sheer costs, which along with other reckless spending in 2008 and 2009 will burden future generations with a catastrophic debt load.

“Some members of Congress grossly underestimate the extent of frustration with them at the grassroots level,” Roberts explained. “These Catholic members need to understand that millions of Catholics are tired of them flouting Church teaching for their own personal, political gain. We are going to punish those offenders at the ballot box next year.”

Roberts cited a Catholic voter outreach model that his organization will use in 2010, which CFA will deploy in several dozen House districts. “We are going to have a major impact next year, and I guarantee Nancy Pelosi that her days of shrouding reckless, radical liberalism in her purposeful misrepresentation of Church doctrine–especially on abortion–are over.”

Catholic Families for America is a national public advocacy group with main offices in Washington, D.C., and Austin, Texas. The organization is building a network of state chapters as well.
