(Gospel) “Children” I asked “why do we need to go to confession?”
“Because the priest forgives our sins” a little girl answered with her hand raised.
I continued: “Is God good? Is God all-powerful?”
“Yes!” they all shouted in unison.
“Then why can’t I confess my sins directly to him and be forgiven?”
One boy explained that he liked speaking directly to another human being; another boy liked hearing advice; a small innocent girl explained that the priest is like a telephone to speak to Jesus.
Yes, I agreed all that is true. But none of these reasons explain why we must go to a priest.
Today’s Gospel gives us the answer: Because JESUS TOLD US TO; it wasn’t an idea that we made up.
“Amen, I say to you, whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.”
So, can God forgive me directly? Of course he can, he’s all-powerful. But he chose to give this power to sinful men.
And when the children asked me why? I was honest: “Idk, ask him!
