Position Summary: The Office of the Dean of Students (DOS) provides programs and services designed to encourage the holistic growth and development of each student throughout his or her CUA career. The office supports students in the transition to and from college life; empowers students to become active participants and leaders in campus life, both inside and outside of the classroom; engages students in learning opportunities that will allow them to become responsible and contributing members of the campus community; fosters an environment that understands, appreciates and respects cultural and human differences on both the individual and global level; and increases understanding and appreciation of student rights and responsibilities. The office strives to help all students build connections to the campus community that will assist them in navigating life at CUA and better prepare them for their role in society.
Reporting to the Associate Vice President & Dean of Students, the Dean of Students represents the department in a variety of public relations forums and university events; establishes relationships with faculty, academic leadership, enrollment services, campus life professionals and other integral staff; serves as an institutional resource for staff and students; supports and promotes the mission and vision of CUA; and contributes positively to the CUA community of research, teaching, learning and service to the Church, the nation, and the world.
The Assistant Dean is responsible for the oversight of and direct management for all aspects of the Alcohol and Other Drug Education and Sexual Assault Education and Awareness programs, including the creation of intentional initiatives to advance student growth as citizens in a global society. In partnership with other Deans and Directors within the DOS, the Assistant Dean’s responsibilities are outlined below.
Essential Responsibilities Include: providing leadership and coordination for departmental retention programs and interventions, focusing on a model of active engagement and mentoring of students in the educational experience; providing individualized support to students in relation to academic, behavioral, personal and/or social issues and concerns; assistance in adjusting to university life; and in the event of a personal, medical, or family emergency; program development and coordination, including marketing and resource acquisition (grant funding) related to alcohol and other drug education and sexual assault education and prevention; managing departmental critical incident response involving students and campus events; developing strong and diverse short-term and long-range goals and objectives related to student retention, engagement, and connectedness utilizing best practices for student success and achievement; and supervising paraprofessional staff.
Minimum Qualifications: A Master’s degree is required. Degree focus in College Student Personnel, Higher Education Administration, or a related field preferred. At least four (4) years of experience in student life/higher education administration required with a background in student retention, student support, and substance abuse education beneficial.
