POSITION SUMMARY
Benedictine College strives to create collateral products that have an elegant, contemporary look – our strategic plan calls for “class, professionalism and excellence” in what we do.
The Art Director is a working designer of publication materials, but is positioned as “lead designer.” S/he provides control of creative direction and critiques the quality and effectiveness of the graphic designers’ work product. S/he reviews and approves printed copy proofs and art developed by staff members and student workers to ensure it conforms to quality standards and branding specifications and assists the director of publications in relations with vendors.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Design
•Give creative direction on College collateral.
•Evaluate collateral through the approval process.
•Mentor and train graphic designers.
•Train staff members on college branding.
•Have intimate understanding of the brand of the college and how all visual elements must work together to support a unified ideal.
•Create College collateral. This includes, but is not limited to, all types and sizes of print materials, web graphics, photo galleries, PowerPoint slides, promotional items and apparel.
•Produce vector graphic signage for banners, billboards, and directional signage.
•Update, suggest, and order software for the college’s design and photography needs.
•Guide a collaborative team in the development of creative concepts used in design and advertising initiatives and photography.
Photography
•Provide quality photojournalistic event coverage and produce professional-grade still and promotional photography.
•Edit, color correct, print, and order photography.
•Train and direct photographers for photo shoots for event coverage, collateral imagery, and/or portrait sessions.
Web
•Give creative direction on the College website, including all sub-sites.
•Create email and web graphics.
•Upload, link, and content manage galleries and graphics.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
•Must submit a portfolio showing successful projects in photography, general graphic design, and magazine layout.
Education
•Bachelor’s degree in graphic design, art, or related field.
Experience
•Five years work experience in graphic design or related field with at least two years as a lead designer.
•Proficient in the latest Adobe CS programs, with particular attention to Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, and Bridge. Flash and Dreamweaver experience is preferred.
•Be able to operate a professional camera – either Nikon or Canon based platform – including external flashes, light kits, and backdrops.
•Must have PO mailing experience and be able to prepare all formats of collateral for a print house. (390)
