ACADEMIC SUPPORT SPECIALIST

Oakcrest School, a grade 6-12 independent school for girls in McLean, Virginia. We are seeking an Academic Support Specialist beginning in July 2014 that will serve the community in a part-time capacity.
As learning specialist, the ideal candidate will report to the Academic Dean and work with all school constituencies to promote and support learning and development. In cooperation with the Academic Dean and the Director for the Middle and Upper Schools, the learning specialist will work collaboratively with teachers to support students with a variety of learning styles, and social, physical and emotional needs. Among other responsibilities, the learning specialist will provide direct tutoring services to students, coordinate accommodations and support for students with learning disabilities and short term medical disabilities. In addition, the appropriate candidate will collaborate with other faculty to monitor progress of students, coach teachers on how to scaffold learning taking into account executive function processes, and guide students and families through the process of educational and psychological evaluation.
Candidates should enjoy working with teenagers and possess an exceptional work ethic, strong communication skills, and a commitment to collegiality. Exceptional listeners and counselors, candidates should possess strong organizational and time management skills and the desire and ability to connect with a diverse group of students and parents.
Requirements: Masters degree in special education or related field preferred, at least 5 years of experience teaching many kinds of learners.
